At the University of Manchester Francis HINDLE (https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9925-4497) worked on the development of a prototype optical tomography system for the measurement of the hydrocarbon distribution in an internal combustion engine, obtaining a PhD in 2000. Following this period, he completed study of the inscription of silica using femtosecond laser radiation. This included the realisation of several long period gratings in standard fibre optics and the analysis of the induced structural changes by small angle x-ray scattering on 3rd generation synchrotron light sources. Since being appointed at the LPCA in 2004 he worked on fabrication and characterisation of chalcogenide glasses along with the development of THz spectrometers. He was appointed Professor in 2019 and has constructed numerous THz instruments using different approaches including Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, Chirped Pulse, Frequency combs.
Current research interests:
- Development of photomixing sources for the generation of cw-THz
- Construction of THz spectrometers
- Frequency and phase locking systems for diode lasers
- Frequency metrology by femtosecond laser combs
- Heterodyne receivers
