Science Fair 2022

The LPCA, in partnership with the Palace of the Universe and Sciences (PLUS) of Cappelle la Grande, participates in the 2022 edition of the science festival with:

  •  A stand “Greenhouse gases and aerosols: these actors of global warming” at the PLUS science village from Thursday 13 to Sunday 16 October. The LPCA is involved in research on the detection of atmospheric pollutants, in particular greenhouse gases and aerosols, these invisible actors of global warming. This work is based on the design of experimental prototypes and the use of advanced tools, for a better understanding of atmospheric phenomena. These instruments are regularly deployed in the field during national and international measurement campaigns. Our objective is to better identify and understand the environmental impacts of climate change, in particular in the field of the physico-chemistry of the atmosphere, and to propose solutions for adaptation and mitigation. We will present educational examples illustrating our scientific actions, for example the detection of gaseous compounds with light, the design of a measurement campaign on aerosols and a tornado model illustrating a catastrophic consequence of global warming. We will also show how Research is organised, in the Hauts-de-France Region, on the issue of climate change, following the example of the “ECRIN: Environment Climate – Research and INnovation” project.

  • A stand “Invisible pollutants at the origin of global warming” at the Calais University Library on Tuesday 11 October. Gases surround us throughout our lives. Often they are colorless and odorless. Fortunately, there are instruments to reveal them. There is a technique to identify gases: it is spectroscopy, based on the analysis of the spectrum of light. Using this principle, lasers can identify greenhouse gases. We will introduce you to the technologies used in the research laboratories of the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale to study these gases at the origin of global warming.

  • A conference entitled: “30 years of Research in Urban and Industrial Environment at the University of the Littoral Côte d’Opale” given at the Halle aux Sucres on October 12, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. by H. Delbarre, Professor at the Université du Littoral Cote of Opal. When it was created 30 years ago, the Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale (ULCO) encouraged its then nascent research laboratories to give an environmental orientation to their work. This strategic direction has proven to be visionary. In 1994, the law on air and the rational use of energy did not yet exist and would only be passed 2 years later! This law recognizes everyone’s right to breathe air that is not harmful to their health. It encourages the implementation of actions aimed at preventing, monitoring and reducing atmospheric pollution, preserving air quality and, to this end, saving and rationally using energy. It is striking to note that all these themes are today keywords for the activities of many ULCO laboratories and platforms, whose current names often speak for themselves: Laboratory of Physico-Chemistry of the Atmosphere (LPCA); Environmental Chemistry and Life Interactions Unit (UCEIV); Territories, Cities, Environment & Society Laboratory (TVES); Dynamics and Structure of Molecular Materials Unit (UDSMM); Joint Measurement Center (CCM). From the outset, research on air quality developed at ULCO in a multidisciplinary manner, combining the university’s skills in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Science Human. We will present how ULCO’s research laboratories have appropriated the issue of air quality in urban and industrial environments.

  • A conference entitled “Energy, pollution, sobriety” given by Arnaud Cuisset, Professor at the University of Littoral Cote d’Opale, at the PLUS planetarium on Sunday October 16 at 4:00 p.m. The future of the planet and the happiness of humanity goes through the path of sobriety. Arnaud Cuisset, professor at ULCO, invites us to define the issues and presents the solutions to think about the future. From 12 years old – Family audience.
